Purple and white curved stripes of a tide-weathered bit of shell; I spent hours along the shoreline of the Outer Banks hunting these beautifully colored shells that were tumbled smooth like a different kind of beach glass. After the devastating storms that buffeted the coast between last October 2025 until February 2026, I went back to collect more of these specific shells that used to be so abundant in the sand. They were all but washed away, and I went home with only a handful. They are now a rare and limited resource until the sea decides to lay them out on the beach again.
