Ogoun consists of an array of manifestations; most carry the aspect of iron smithing, fire, and tools. Ogoun Feray is a lwa of war, of battle. Ogoun Badagri is identified with the power that comes from diplomacy, statesmanship and negotiation, a known diplomat, he rules over diplomacy, and also provides the gift of prophecy. Ogoun Balenjo is the captain of the ship of Agoué and patron of travelers, and who nullifies poison. Ogoun Batala is associated with the power for independence, cool, level-headed, the strategist.

Ogoun Feray carries an iron saber and wears a red sash. Ogoun Feray is the god of war and metals, pioneering, intelligence, justice, medicine, and political power; these are associated with the symbol of the tool that can advance humans mastery over the environment. Ogoun Feray is impetuous, authoritarian, cautious, hardworking, suspicious and a bit selfish. Ogoun Feray fights to win, he is the essence of every fight, and he is present wherever there is war, discord, or the manifestation of war. Whatever you seek from Ogoun Feray, you can trust that he will work continually until he wins.

To Ogoun Feray all woman are the manifestation of beauty. As a husband he is a wonderful protector, keeping his wives safe and well protected.  As the embodiment of strength and courage, he brings these gifts to his wives, and all those who serve him.  He is also a master healer, and although most people associate the machete as a weapon, for Feray it is an implement that can bring both harm and healing.

Ogoun is a primordial orisha who first appeared as a hunter named Tobe Ode. He is said to have been the first Orisha to descend to Earth to find suitable place for future human life. In some traditions he is said to have cleared a path for the other gods to enter Earth, using a metal ax and with the assistance of a dog. He disappeared into the earth with the promise to help those who call on his name. His followers believe him to have disappeared into the earth's surface instead of dying.

Ogoun is the traditional deity of warriors, hunters, blacksmiths, technologists, and drivers. Drivers carry an amulet of Ogoun to ward off traffic accidents. The primary symbols of Ogoun are iron, the dog, and the palm frond. They symbolize Ogoun's role in transformation, mediation, and function. Iron is the primary emblem of Ogoun.

Ogoun Feray, Ogou Ferraille, is syncretized with St. James the Greater (St. Jacques Majeur) in the Vodou tradition, or St. George in Rio de Janeiro.
