Harlot’s Devotion

Description

Dusk was settling in as Harlot’s taxi drove slowly past the old stone church. Something about the way the waning sunlight softly illuminated the stained glass windows compelled her to abruptly ask the driver to stop and let her out. She pushed at the heavy oak door, a draft of air bringing the scent of ancient manuscripts and stale incense to meet the exhaust of the city. Harlot slipped inside, the darkness slowly giving way to the flickering of candlelight as her eyes adjusted. The church was heavy with centuries of prayer, every surface carved and detailed with devotion. Admiring the elaborately carved mahogany wood of the confessional, Harlot felt her heart flutter. It had been a long time since she’d had anything to do with her roots; she had run as far away from that life as she was able years before. But now, something stirred inside her, a reckoning of sorts, and she stepped hesitantly toward the door…
